About the Movie Babes in Arms / Origins of the Song

Other songs besides "Good Morning" written for the movie Babes in Arms currently included in the Cafe Songbook Catalog of The Great American Songbook: none*

*The only song written specifically for the movie Babes in Arms, not those written for the Broadway show or others interpolated into the movie, was "Good Morning." For a list of all songs used in the movie see IMDB Soundtrack. For a listing of the songs Rodgers and Hart wrote for the 1937 Broadway show Babes in Arms as well as full production details for the show, see IBDB.

"Good Morning" is introduced in the movie Babes in Arms by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney (See Main Stage, above). Mickey's and Judy's characters are plugging the song written by Mickey to a song publisher to get Mickey's career as a songwriter started. The parents of these kids are vaudevillians who have fallen on hard times (Hollywood movies have made vaudeville more or less irrelevant.) and are preparing to hit the road in what turns out be be a futile effort to make some money to take care of their families--who are being left behind to fend for themselves. It is these circumstances that give Mickey (Rooney's name in the show is also Mickey.) the idea to put on a show to raise money to keep the town social worker from having them all sent to a work farm. Mickey and Judy sell the song but it isn't enough to convince Mickey's father to give up his idea of trying to revive his act.

"Good Morning" was also interpolated into the Freed produced movie musical Singin' in the Rain of 1952 where it is sung and danced to by Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor.
