About the revue Casino de Paris / Origins of the Song

Variant dates for
"I Wanna Be Loved":

  1. *(Multiple copies of the sheet music give the copyright date as 1934 and indicate the song is "from Casino de Paree Revue";
  2. Wikipedia gives the publication date as 1933
  3. faqs.org contains an entry under the song's title that indicates a date of 1933, but has it coming from a revue called Billy Rose's Crazy Quilt, which bears a date of 1931;
  4. Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball, date the song 1932).

Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball, Reading Lyrics, New York: Pantheon Books, 2000.

Impresario and producer Billy Rose operated a night club in New York City from 1933-1936 called Casino de Paree in which he mounted cabaret revues. Whether this venue is associated with a revue titled Cabaret de Paree for which "I Wanna Be Loved" was supposedly written or was just the name of the club where it was first performed is currently unknown to us. (Ed.s' note: The address of Casino de Paree was 254 W. 54th street, New York City. In fact its building was to become the home of the famous disco Studio 54 and is now (2011) a legitimate theater operated by Roundabout Theater Co.)

Rose, mostly known for his work as an impresario, was well known for many things. One was writing lyrics while another was "cutting in" on the credits for a lyric written by someone else. How much of the lyric he wrote for for "I Wanna Be Loved" is unknown but chances are Edward Heyman is the primary lyricist for the song.
