The no-nonsense verse wastes no time getting down to the business at hand -- setting up the theme of the refrain: let's get away from it all--where the "all" is the boring routine of modern life. The transporting power of the refrain with its mundane yet somehow exotic imagery is compelling enough to have made the verse superfluous --and therefore so seldom sung.

Verse:

I'm so tired of this dull routine,
Up to town on the eight-fifteen,
back at night, off to bed and then
Get up and start it all over again.

The familiar refrain begins:

Let's take a boat to Bermuda--
Let's take a plane to St. Paul--
Let's take a kayak
to Quincy or Nyack,
Let's get away from it all.
