The song bears a copyright of 1932 but was not used until 1934 in the Schwartz and Dietz show Revenge with Music. The origin of the song is a bit murky. Dietz doesn't discuss it in his autobiography. Robert Kimball and Robert Gottlieb in their book Reading Lyricsdates it 1932 in correspondence with the copyright date, whereas Thomas Hischak inThe Tin Pan Alley Song Encyclopedia says it was written for The Gibson Family Radio show, which premiered in 1934, though it was never used on the show. It didn't surface until Georges Metaxa premiered it in Revenge with Music on November 28, 1934.
