"She's Funny That Way"

Critic Wilfred Sheed contends that Whiting was "at or near the creation of talkies" and that although his lyric for "She's Funny That Way" is "apparently a hymn to a wife's willingness to adapt to her husband's capriciousness" the song's "real life wrinkle is that it was actually Mrs. Whiting's caprice that got Richard out to Hollywood to try his luck in the Great Sound Rush, so he was the one who had to be 'funny that way'."

Sheed adds that even though Whiting refused to take credit for the tune of "She's Funny That Way" "his fingerprints are all over it" (Wilfred Sheed, p. 188, hard cover edition).
