The Mask and Wig show of the Mask and Wig Club at the University of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest student produced college shows in the United States, dating back to 1881. Bobby Troup graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the Mask and Wig Club, for which several sources indicate he wrote "Daddy." However, hard evidence this is currently lacking.

The Mask and Wig archive for "Out of This World," The Mask and Wig Spring Show of 1941, does not reveal any material for "Daddy," however, the archive is apparently not complete. Sammy Kaye's recording of "Daddy" was first charted May 24, 1941 (By June it reached #1 where it remained for eight weeks), and by October 1941, "Daddy" could be found on the soundtrack of the movie Two Latins from Manhattan. All of this is consistent with "Daddy" having been written for the Spring Show of Mask and Wig, which typically ran from late January through March, and then quickly becoming a national hit.
