Overview and Commentary:
Jack Lawrence (This section is in progress.)
Edited and with an Introduction by Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball, New York: Pantheon Books, 2000.
As Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimbal point out in their overview of Lawrence for their book Reading Lyrics, a thumbnail of Lawrence's career as a lyricist can be created out of the songs he wrote that are connected to specific performers or occasions:
"Ciribiribin" became Harry James' theme song; "Linda" was written to celebrate the birth of Linda Eastman MCartney; and he gave first hits to Sarah Vaughan ("Tenderly"). . . ; Dinah Shore ("Yes, My Darling Daughter"); Frank Sinatra ("All or Nothing at All"); and the Ink Spots ("If I Didn't Care").
He had big hits written for Independent publication ("Symphony") as well as "a superior score" for a Broadway show (I Had a Ball). (Gottlieb and Kimball, p. 468).
